Statue of Liberty

July 7, 2000

I still have a clear memory of the driver saying We are in New Jersey dozen times and Miguela and Ayumi getting lost in spite of that. But that's another story and not mine to tell.

We left after nine in the morning I think and most of the people spent the two hour drive to NYC sleeping, so they missed the driver playing a tourist guide : On your right you can see ..., take a look on your left. as we were getting close to NYC. Every once in a while he also reminded us that we were in New Jersey, not New York, and that we were supposed to take the ferry back to New Jersey. He even made us say it several times.

It was a beutiful day and because we had to wait for the ferry to take us to Ellis Island, I used the opportunity to make very nice pictures of Manhattan skyline. Then me and Aya went up to the the US Navy officers standing nearby trying to recruit new people and made a picture with them. We talked for a while and we were given some promotion stuff - everybody admires my mousepad with NAVY JOBS written on it.

Pictures from the trip.

The Inscription on the Statue of Liberty:

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
a mighty woman with a torch
whose flame is imprisoned lightning,
and her name Mother of Exiles.

From her beacon-hand glows
world-wide welcome;
her mild eyes command the air-bridged harbor
that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands your storied pomp!"
cries she with silent lips.

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Emma Lazarus (1849-1887)
